Oaths
Jesus said to his disciples, in Matthew 5:33-37, “You have heard it was said to your ancestors, ‘Do not take a false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow.’ But I tell you do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king. All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.”
An Eye for an Eye
Jesus has a unique way of looking at living experiences. In Matthew 5:38-48, He teaches us new ways that will lead us to perfection. For example, we should not imbibe the maxim “an eye for an eye”, instead he teaches in verse 39, “Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.”
Love for Enemies
“Love your neighbor and hate your enemy”, This was the general consensus stated in Matthew 5:43-44. Then Jesus says this, “But I tell you love you enemies and pray, for those who persecute you that you may be children of your Father in heaven.” Jesus wants us to be perfect like our heavenly father is perfect.
The whole essence of these teachings is the development of our conduct to exemplify that of our maker.
