Difficulty: A Foundation for Success

“You intended to harm me but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now done, the saving of many lives. In all cases what the enemy meant for evil God turns it to good.” (Genesis 50:20) These are the words Joseph said to his brothers, because of the mistreatment he had received from them. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him who have been called according to his purpose.” this quote from Romans 8:28, perfectly explains Joseph’s mindset and response to his environment after the blatant disrespect from his family.

Joseph continually shared the revelation he received from God in his dreams with his brothers. He said, “Listen to this dream I had: we were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my head rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.” His brothers were livid. They said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule over us?” This dream of his made Joseph hated all the more.

He had another dream, and despite their previous reactions, he told his brothers and father about it. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and the eleven stars were bowing down to me.” His father rebuked him and his brothers were jealous of him. (Genesis 37:5-4)

Some days later, his father sent him to his brothers, who were grazing the flock at Dotham. They spotted Joseph and plotted to kill him from where they stood. Instead, they ended up selling Joseph to a Caravan of Ishmaelites due to Judas’s, Joseph’s brother, insistence. Then, the merchants went to Egypt.

When Joseph was sold, he thought his life was over and that he would never be able to see his family again, eventually forgotten. One day he had reconnected with his family, the only difference now was that Joseph was a provider in another country. He was Egypt’s prime minister. (Genesis 41:1-57) This goes to show that even when things seem to be going terribly, and everything is piled up against you, God’s will will always prevail in all circumstances.
